Waystones and riftstones

Current Build menu preview

Wake the settlement network

In the full game, every village, town and city has a waystone, including settlements beyond the Crossing. A settlement waystone wakes when you walk within 30 tiles. In newly generated settlements it is a solid standing stone. Bump a dormant stone to wake it, then bump it again to open the world map on its Waystones list.

Reach and departure

Choose an awake destination from the world map. Ordinary waystone travel works in the open world while you are within 30 tiles of an awake waystone. Distance adds horizontal and vertical steps. For a settlement, its recorded centre, market square and known stone can each put you within reach.

Use the Waystones list

Open the world map and choose Waystones, or press T while the map is open. Your stones, active settlement stones and discovered dormant settlement stones have separate groups. Each group puts the nearest stones first. Travel takes you to an awake stone when departure is allowed. Centre moves the map to the stone. Rename is available for player-built stones you may rename.

Read the stone and its map mark

Awake waystones glow blue after the waking effect. Dormant stones stay still. Look names the stone and says whether it is awake or dormant. The world map marks discovered settlement stones with a blue ring, filled when awake. Player-built stones have their own stone mark. The minimap also marks known stones in view.

Enemies near your own stone

If every awake stone in reach is player-built, enemies within 12 horizontal and vertical steps of you block departure. An awake settlement waystone in reach still allows travel. A waywheel removes the distance requirement, but does not bypass this nearby-enemy check. An adult wyvern with Winged Courier has its own flight rules.

Arrive beside the stone

Waystones are solid. Travel looks for clear ground beside the destination stone. If those cells are blocked, it searches farther away. A stone whose exact position is not yet known falls back to the settlement square or centre before the landing search.

Build your own links

Learn the Waystone blueprint to build your own stones. Each new stone wakes immediately. You can keep several at once, with a higher crystal cost for each stone already standing. A sleeping player-built stone from an older save still needs Attune Waystone at the stone.

Older saves and occupied stone sites

An older save can keep a built object where a newly added settlement stone would stand. The settlement’s map wake area still works.

Demo difference

Hearthmere in the demo has a waystone on the map and its 30-tile wake area. The demo does not place a physical stone on its square or offer the Waystone blueprint.

Riftstones use a separate pair

A riftstone connects to one other riftstone. Waking either end opens the pair in both directions. Stand within 5 tiles of the end you are using, counting diagonal steps. The pair has a 150-turn cooldown after travel.
