Travelling
Choose a destination on the world map and use Travel here to begin an overland journey. A quest with a search area takes you to the edge of that area.
Automatic travel can stop for a newly encountered hostile. The distance setting defaults to eight tiles. A visible enemy hunting you can stop the journey from farther away. The message names the creature and explains the stop. After dealing with it, you can resume an interrupted overland trip.
Auto-descend and auto-exit stop for any hostile in sight. They use a stricter check than ordinary travel.
Reading river towns on the map
Zoom in on the world map to see a settlement's streets, bridges and banks. In settlements with newer street layouts, the broad world-river drawing fades out as that local ground appears. At distant zoom, the map still shows the larger river route.
