Rooms and roofs

A sheltered room needs a closed boundary and a roof over every tile. A held-open door joins the spaces on either side. Open stairs, water and unexplored edges can stop the space counting as a room. Select the room to see what is missing.

New colonies can plan timber roofs automatically when a small surface room closes. Each roof tile still costs timber and needs a builder. Turning automatic roof planning off leaves existing roof orders in place. Roofs you deliberately removed or cancelled stay excluded until you order them again.

Shelter helps settlers rest and keeps covered workplaces running at their normal pace. Furnishings determine the room’s use. Beds make sleeping space, a hearth provides dining and leisure, and a room whose beds are all marked Medical is an infirmary.

A roof also needs support. Solid rock or a founded stone support can carry it within four cardinal steps. A founded wall or door frame reaches two. A wall standing over a known open space below needs support underneath before it can hold the roof above.
