Preparing for winter in The Wilds
The first two weeks are mild. Autumn follows, then the first snow begins around displayed day 29. Fresh water starts icing over around day 36, with deep winter from day 43. This calendar follows the run’s elapsed days.
Fresh-water ice blocks filling containers and access to nets unless you open a fishing hole. An auger is quickest. An axe, hatchet or pickaxe also works. Without one of those tools the job takes longer and uses fuel.
An ice hole lasts about one day. Check it before trying to fill containers or tend a net. Salt-water nets do not need a hole, though winter still lowers the catch chance.
Cold weather reduces wildlife activity. Bears den up and larger game becomes scarce, while rabbits remain active at a lower rate. Improve shelter, keep warm bedding dry and have a way to catch food before winter closes in.
