Names earned in towns

The name a town gives you

Your deeds can earn a name in each town, such as the Matchmaker or the Peacemaker. The town keeps one current name, chosen from its deed history. Other towns can know you by different names. These local names are separate from faction standing, friendship with one person, Patronage donations and the honours in your character’s title list.

What counts toward town standing

A successful introduction gives 2 points, a fully mended feud 4, a successful marriage 5, a provision deed 1 and qualifying festival help 2. Exposed deceit has its own count and does not subtract these points. These are the town’s personal deed points. They do not buy ranks in the Homestead Ledger.

Which name takes priority

The order is the Schemer, the Liar, the Peacemaker, the Matchmaker, the Open-Handed, the Devoted, then a Friend of the town. Only the first matching name is current. More good deeds do not erase exposed lies. Meeting a higher rule can replace a lower name without losing the deeds that earned it.

Introducing neighbours

Three successful introductions can earn the Matchmaker, unless a higher name applies. Both a new friendship and a successful strengthening count. An introduction refused because the people are already close enough does not count. The conversation offers introduction candidates from nearby settlement people you have met.

Mending a feud

Two fully mended feuds can earn the Peacemaker, unless a higher name applies. Easing a feud without mending it does not record this deed. The mediation menu requires at least 20 affinity with both sides before it offers the candidate.

Food and the Open-Handed name

Five provision deeds can earn the Open-Handed, unless a higher name applies. Stocking your family larder counts once when food is actually provided. Bring food for the little ones counts when the recipient is a lone parent. The Give action for a hungry townsperson also counts once. Share some food and feeding children in a two-parent household do not record a provision deed through that social gift action.

Marriage and the Devoted name

The Devoted requires a marriage deed in that town and at least 8 town-standing points, unless a higher name applies. A marriage gives 5 points, so it does not earn this name by itself. For example, one marriage and three provision deeds reach 8 points without meeting a higher name rule. A Friend of the town instead needs 6 standing when no higher rule applies.

Helping at a festival

Join the dancing, Share a toast and Bring your family to the square each record a help deed when that action is offered and chosen. Dancing needs a festival. A toast is also offered on a market day. Bringing your family needs a festival and a marriage in that town. Each help deed gives 2 points toward its personal town standing.

Being caught in lies

Three exposed deceit events can make the town call you the Liar. Six make you the Schemer. In the current Spread word action, the claim must be rejected and negative, then pass a separate 50% caught roll to record deceit. A rejected positive claim does not add this count. These names take priority over the good-deed names.

Reading and hearing your name

Choose View Legend on the character sheet. Known As lists the current name for each town and why it was earned. Crossing a new current-name rule queues an explanation for the player whose deed caused it. The town deed history itself is shared across the party. During conversation, the local-name greeting has a 50% chance to be tried when earlier openings have not already taken priority.
