Friends, quarrels and making up

A settler’s opinion of someone combines their time together with what that person has done for them. The two people can feel differently about the same relationship. Rescuing, tending, comforting, teaching, praise, welcomes, jokes and ordinary conversation can all give someone a reason to like another settler.

Shared work, meals, leisure and sleep can bring people closer. Difficult work while hungry or thirsty can do the opposite. An unresolved insult, brawl or killing can sour their company, so simply putting two rivals at the same table may make things worse.

Low morale can start a quarrel. Repeated arguments can become insults, then blows between rivals, then a fight that can kill. Keep apart stops exchanges between those two and lets the ill feeling fade. It also stops them comforting each other or talking the quarrel out.

Settlers can talk through ill feeling while both are fed and at a meal or leisure. The person starting the conversation must be Forgiving or in good spirits. This eases their reasons for disliking the other person. The other settler only lets go of their own reasons if they are ready too.

A friend’s kindness can outlast the original favour because becoming friends adds its own reason. Comrades must have fought together. A killing leaves much stronger ill feeling for the victim’s friends, and witnessing it can also turn other settlers against the killer.
