Atonement and the blood-price
Paying a fine
A captain can offer atonement when theft rumours have spread through the alliance, or when you owe standing for killings. Accept the fine and pay it to the captain or at the source settlement notice board. You need the stated gold. The captain's death does not cancel this fine.
What a captain's payment restores
The payment reduces theft awareness by 2 levels in the source settlement. Other settlements in the alliance at Alert or higher lose 1 level. Standing restored cannot exceed your recorded debt. Theft-only fines restore up to 25 standing. If there is debt for killings, the combined limit is 60, with killing debt settled first.
How the captain's fine is priced
The captain's fine starts at 50 gold. Add 75 for each level of the highest theft awareness in the alliance. Add 25 for each settlement in the alliance at Alert or higher. Add 25 for each tier of the captain's settlement. Finally, add 20 for each point of killing debt the payment will restore.
The notice board blood-price
A hostile faction's notice board can offer a blood-price when you owe it standing for killings. This route works without speaking to a captain. It costs 50 gold plus 20 for each standing point restored, up to 60 per payment. It settles killing debt and leaves theft awareness unchanged.
Further payments and allied hostility
Captain fines and board blood-prices share a 2,000-turn cooldown for each faction. A larger debt can need further payments. If an ally is causing the hostility, paying this faction can leave its patrols hostile. Check which faction the board names before paying.
