| Eligible equipment | A generated piece with a recognised material and base type, at least one positive attribute named by that base type, and a compatible next material. Named legendary, set and artifact pieces use other rules. |
| Attributes | The current totals of attributes named by the base type are multiplied by the new material multiplier divided by the old one. A positive affected attribute rises by at least 1. Other attribute keys stay unchanged. Negative affected attributes follow the base type’s sign rule. |
| Material selection | A compatible material from the next tier is selected. The Upgrade action does not offer a material choice. |
| Where to put the item | Worn equipment or an identified, wearable single piece in your backpack. A stack of pieces does not qualify as a backpack target. |
